we begin with breaking news this morning. strong winds and heavy rain swept across the region overnight leaving a mess. >> the winds tore off roofs and sent debris flying. news 4's megan mcgrath is live in northeast washington with a look at the damage. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. we're along the rhode island corridor here in northeast washington. this little area really got hit hard by the storm that blew through overnight. people are wondering was it a tornado or a powerful torm? along the shopping center parking lot, they lost a section of the roof. there's damage to the back. also a lot of debris fell down on to a mini van. shattered windows and the like. just to give you an idea where we are, this is the shopping center between rhode island avenue and brentwood road where the home depot is, a giant here. there's also an aj wright.

sections of the roof came flying off. some of the debris we see has been wrapped around some of the light posts in the parking lot area. home depot got a lot of damage. they had sheds, they had some plants and stands they were all sitting on. all of that just blew around and was smashed to pieces. they have a big cleanup job ahead of them. now we have been speaking to folks here, some of whom were in the ea at the time it happened, including one gentleman he and his wife were wondering whether or not it was a tornado. well, it was like a train roaring. this is quarter to 1:00. it woke my wife and i up. we heard the windows began to rattle. weried to go downstairs in the basement. we laid down on the floor. it lasted less than ten minutes.

i heard something fall. a tree fell. i came out and looked around and we had no lights. >> reporter: rhode island avenue inbound is closed. we have a lot of issues with trees and power lines as well. back to you all in the studio. >> thanks very much. megan mcgrath reporting live. up 95, vettors are trying to determine if a tornado touched down overnight. several hom in baltimore have been damaged. right now wbal radio is reporting that firefighters are searchin through homes in northeast baltimore that were badly damaged by strong winds and gusts. there are reports of people injured, but no reports of any deaths at this point. we will bring you more detail as they become available. tom, what kind of investigation do they need to do to determine whether there were, in fact, tornados that hit in northeast and baltimore? >> they could do a damage assessment, see if there's any circulation to just the debris pattern, as well as tree damage there. but likely it was not a tornado. we did tave any tornado

warnings. we did have some indications there was minor circulation a loft in some of the cells. no reports of any funnel clouds sighted or anything like that. straight-line winds can do that damage. gusts over 60 miles per hour can do that sort of damage just from a typical thunderstorm. right now we have a lingering sprinkle. see the blob of bluein central montgomery, gathgaithersburg. an area of light sprinkle activity. sprinkles in howard count that is drifting east on this wednesday morning. temperatures on the mild side. it's now in the low to mid-50s throughout mosof the area. except out of the mountains it's chillier. 56 in washington. in the 40s western maryland and west virginia. that rain came through much of yesterday and la evening. unloaded an inch of rain throughout most of the area. strong storms raced through around midnight. they're up into new enand

where they're getting heavy rain there. blustery wind northwest gusting to 30 to 35 miles per hour. and we'll have that really starting up around mid morning. and mostly clear evening. a look at thursday, friday, ening. tom, interstate is relatively quiet. that is very good news. the neighborhoods might be a little bit of an issue. do be careful. debr debris, tree limbs and damage. up to 395, no concerns. a little volume there. 270 uthbound, old georgetown road, moving along pretty well. just below this point at the exit from 270 onto the inner loop, reports of an accident. police headed over to check on that. we have that stretch of george masoclosed in arlington. stretch of mass near naval observe tear that's blocked. and rhode island avenue between 4th and 12th in northeast remains closed. southeast not so bad so far this

morning. that is good news. out to the rails we go. update you on trains. metrorail, no delays. vre, fredericksburg 300, 302, slightly delayed. marc, 503 and brunswick 872 currently delayed. >> thanks very much, jerry. if you live or work or just drive-through arlingn, this is what you may have to deal with. >> overnight storms bught down trees on to power lines on george mason drive. kimberly suiters is there. good morning, k herly. >> reporter: good morning, joe and eun. two joggers came up and said the storms woke them up because it was so loud. holy moly. this utility pole absolutely snapped. lines all tangled up with the traffic light lines. crews here on the scene from virginia dominion power said there are three phases or three lines going into this thing, each with 20,000 volts.

so 60,000 volts, snapping, hitting the trees, and going directly to ground. that's what caused the explosive sound. some drivers had been ignoring the cones set up not only here but also washington boulevard just a block away at washington and george mason. people inside the hospital said the windows shook when this explosion happened. at this hour we know 5,000 homes in northern virginia have no electricity. there's a little bit of traffic getting by. there are no detour signs, though. people are coming up on the cones and it's catching them off guard. stay away from this area of north 16th and george mason. back to you in the studio. >> kimberly, thank you. right now 4200 dominion customers without pow. pepco work to go restore power to 1,600 people. bge says 19,000 are in the dark right now, mo of them in the baltimore area. weave a traffic alert for

commuters who use the dulles toll road. expect major delays this morning. the two right lanes on the eastbound side will be closed near buehler road overpass. according to the autrity, the overpass was damaged yesterday afternoowhen it was struck by a truck carrying a backhoe. the buehler road overpass and the two lanes of the toll road will be closed until the bridge is repaired. today jurors will deliberate the fate of chandra levy's accused killer after a month of testimony. attorneys made their final arguments yesterday. prosecutors closed by sang guanque's face was the last thing levy saw before she died in rock creek rk. but the defense said that was fiction. they argued there was no evidence linking guandique to where levy's body was found. ey also said former california congressman gary condit is the one acting guilty. his dna was found in levy's undergarmentin her apartment.

more on the corruption case in prince george's county. may include the bribing of unnad public officials. amrik and ravinder melhi were arrested monday. they are accused of having two officers help them pay untaxed cigarettes and alcohol. $400,000 in cash was found in a closet of the couple's home. >> the information, the inference that is out there is bribery. you know, the fact is, we are stilvery early in this case. >> the judge held the couple without bond. more arrests in this case are expected. new information about donovan mcnabb's contract. it isn't valued as much as we first thought. why the president's meeting with kongdzal leaders is postponed. and sitting down with the godfather of go-go, chuck brown.

signs prior to the blowout. the chair of e 15-member committee that conducted the study said the well continued to operate despite several indications of potential hazards. the report said it might never be able to determine what happened because much of the evidence was lost when 11 workers died and the rig sank pack in april. first meeting between president obama and the congressional leaders since midterm elections has been moved to the end of this month. that meeting was supposed to take place at the whe house tomorrow. several asked that it be moved because of scheduling conflicts. it will focus on cooperation between the parties and the white house. energy policy, international trade are expected to be major topics, as well the proposed extension of those bush-era tax cuts. today could be the day that

hoping to keep the weight off to keep his heart healthy. redskins new deal with donovan mcnabb may be getting some jeers. we're learning new details about that contract. it's not quite as lavish as we first thought. while there are up to $40 million in guarantees, the redskins would only be on the hook for $3.5 million if they cut him at the end of this season. but if they decide the keep the veteran quarterback around, he would be due another $12.5 million during the off-season. there are a lot of interesting people here in washington, so we thought we would find a few of them and ask what's on their minds. jim vance put that question to chuck brown, the godfather of go-go. here's what he had to say. >> in terms of big names in washington, barack obama sure qualifies. but just as surely, so does the name chuck brown. ♪

there were scary moments at one of some kids favorite restaurants out in california. three men burst into a chuck e. cheese restaurant and held 40 employees and customers at gunpoint while they robbed the store. cameras caug the men on tape. fortunately, no one was injured. apparently at one point a gunman pointed a gun at a ild.

ashe sun rises in the nation' catal. >> not a storm cloud in sight. >> beautiful sunshine will be returning. 6:53 this morning. storms are long gone. temperatures around the region are balmy for this time of the morning. as wlook at the radar, a little patch of ue there just in central panhandle of west virginia. that's a little sprinkle. and temperatures are in the low to mid-50s. shenandoah valley to chesapeake bay, lower eastern shore, near 60. mountains, in the 40s now. weather watchers reporting all evening and into late last night of some thunder and isolated cells did produce storm damage. and not widespread damage, just isolated damage. winds increasing by late morning, afternoon, gusting 30 to 35 miles per hour. out of the southwest shifting northwest a few clouds racing

through. highs low to mid-60s. a look at the rest of the workweek, into the first part of the weekend in ten minutes. as we have been reporting all morning long, storm damage signicant in some locations, including this stretch of massachusetts avenue northwest, which remains closed. mass avenue closed between 34th and 35th northwest. detours are in place right now. that big tree will take time for that to g out of the roadway. that stretch of mass avenue near naval observatory closed for the time being. 270 getting reports of an accident. southbound after montrose road. fire and rescue just dispatched. in from the west along interstate 66 crawling as you get through manassas. word of a broken down tractor trailer in the roadway near 234 business on i-66. out to the rails, busy morning all of a sudden. metro, green line delays, broken down train at suitland. that's been cleared bu delays

in the direction of greenbelt. 300, 302 and 304 delayed. brubs wick 872, 874 and 890 delayed as well. jerry, thank you. we begin with breaking news this morning. strong winds and heavy rin swept across the region overnight leavin a mess. the winds tore off roofs and sent debris flying. megan mcgrath isive in northwest d.c. with a look at the damage. megan, gd morning. well, good morning, eun. when this storm blew through it packeduite a punch in sections of the city. we're here in northeast washington standing in the parking lot of that home depot shopping center bween rhode island and brentwood. a rowof houses off the edge of the parking lot and the mage that was done to the end unit. they lost a section of the roof. windows are broken. debris in the backyard went flying into the mini van. that shattered windowsment a lot of damage in the small area.

look at video we shot here. some of the businesses were also damaged. we have the home depot. there's an aj wright. there are oer sho here a well. aj wright lost a section of the roof. home depot garden center ims outside were blowing around. the stands they were sitting on were smashed and some of the sheds as well. we have a tremendous amount of damage in th area. folks that were here at the time it happened said it was quite a sight and the sound was unbelievable. well, it was like a train wreck. knocks things down. >> like a rain roaring. we heard this noise of a tree falling. >> rorter: and let's take a look here live at aj wright. the sun has come up across the parking lot some of the debris that's here.

what you see wrapped around that light post is actually insulation and other debris from the roof. it's not actually metal but foam and the like. there is a lot of metal as you go closer tthe building. in fact, the big air-conditioning unit that, big heavy air-conditioning unit that's normally up on the roof actually smashed in pieces here athe cornerf that lot. we're told aj wright is without power at this point. now the good news here is that nobody was jured. no reports of injuries at this pot. back to you all in the studio. >> but a lot of cleanup. megan mcdpratgrath. 95, several homes in baltimore ha been damaged by what might be a tornado. wbao radioeports firefighters are searching through homes in northeast baltimore badly damaged by a strong wind gusts. there are reports of people injured. no reports of y deaths at this point. we have a live report coming up in continue minutes on news 4.

also, if you have pictures of damage, we wanto see them. send them to ic at nbcwashington.com. now a courtroom bombshell. the case of a couple arrested in the latest round of raids in prin george's county may include the bribing of unnamed public officials. amrik melhi and his wife ravinder were arrested this week. thcouple is accused of paying two prin george's county police officers for helping them sell untaxed alcohol d cigarettes. $400,000 was found in the closet of their home. >> theact is we are still very early in this case. >> the judge did order the couple held without bond. officials say more arrests are pected. the entire world is buzzing about the upcoming royal wedding this morning.

the fate of chandra levy's accused killer after a month of testimony. attorneys made their final arguments yesterday. prosecutors closed by saying guandique's face was the last thing levy saw before she died in rock creek park. but the defense said that was fiction. they argued there was no evidence linking guandique to levy. they also said former california congressman gary condit is the one who has been acting guilty. members of the ethiopian community will protest outside the dc 9 nightclub in northwest washington this morning. they're upset that a hearing is being held which could reinstate the club's liquor license. it was revokedast month after a confrontation between several employees ended in a man's death. five were originally charged with second-degree murder in muhammad's death but they were later dropped after the medical examiner could not link his death to that con frtation. confrontation.

today's protest begins at 10:00 a.m. a gruesome find in a box left on the side of a local highway. state workers ma the horrific discery on a remote stretch of i-70 in frederick. maryland state police shut down partf the interstate while forensic experts and crime scene technicians spent hours combing the brush. a decrease in crime since the illegal immigration policy took effect three years ago. the policy denies some services to illegal immigrants and requires police to check citizenship status when making arrests for criminal violations. it is similar to a recently passed immigration law in arizona. opponents say the study fond it created a temporary ethnic divide. >> the county's reputation as a community that is welcoming and

the home depot were blo around. those are the wooden stands at the outdoor plants were sitting on. you can see everything was turned upside-down and smashed. debris blue aosshe parking lot. so we have all kinds of trash that is now scattered along this parking lot. also houses in the area were damaged. this row home on the end has some roof damage on the backside. they also lost siding. debris fell down on top of a car. a real mess here this morning. we've en talking to folks about what they heard, what they saw. and they said it was really quite something else. very, very loud. very, very sudden. some are wonderg whether maybe it was a tornado. >> well, it's like a train going. this is quarter to1:00 i think it woke me and my wife up. got up. heard the windows again to rattle. we were going to try to go downstairs in the basement. &lay down on the flo. it only lasted less than ten

minutes. so i got up. something fell. a tree fell in our yard. then i came out and looked around and we had no lights. >> reporter:ow, across the parking lot here at the aj wright, they lost sections of the roof up on the top. also that really large air-conditioning unit that's usually up on top of the roof. well, it's n smashed to pieces, laying in the parking lot by the corner of the building. they're also without electricity. so a lot of damage, lot of people wondering exact what happened. was it a tornado or just a very, very powerful storm? we're just going to have to wait and see. a lot ofolks spending a long time today cleaning this mss up, that's for sure. eun, back to you. >> megan mcgrath in northeast washington. megan, thank you. breaking ns out of baltimore. this video just in to news 4. look at the damage in northeast baltimore from what might have been a tornado there. firefighters are looking through homes that were badly damaged by a strong wind gust.

there are reports of some people injured, but no reports of any deaths at this point. futh up the east coast, this is video coming in to us from new jersey where strong winds toppled over planes attrenton mercer airport. reports that wind blew off several roofs in that area. and a traffic alert we've been telling you about the dulles toll road. all lanes are now open. according to the authority, the overpass was damaged yesterday afternoon when it was struck by a truck carrying a backhoe. once ain, all lanes are open but buehler road bridge remains closed. 6:57. more of our top stories. we now know the liquor store owner arrested earer this week had nearly a half million dollars stashed in his closet. amrik melhi and his wife ra vin der were arrted as part of the corruption crackdown in prince george's county.
